Brightspace – AU’s new learning platform

At the beginning of the autumn semester, Brightspace will replace Blackboard as AU’s shared learning platform. From now on, Brightspace will be where you access your courses, communicate with teachers and fellow students and find material and other relevant course-related information.

Please be aware that you are responsible for staying informed about your courses. You can stay informed via email notifications, the Brightspace Pulse App or by checking Brightspace on a regular basis.

Below, you will find a number of technical guidelines for some of the key functions in Brightspace. New information and technical guidelines will be added to the page on an ongoing basis to help you get started with the platform before the new semester.

How to download your course content from Blackboard

Before Blackboard shuts down on 31 October, make sure you have downloaded all the relevant files you want to save. You can download all files from a Blackboard course by doing the following:

  1. Go to the front of the Blackboard and select the "Course Download Tool" module.
  2. Click on the Course Download link, and an overview of registered courses will open. Select the courses from which you want to download files.
  3. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and click Download. You will now receive an email confirming that the process has started. When your download is complete, you will receive an email with a link to a ZIP file with the requested course content from Blackboard.

Content not included

  • Text in the course that has not been uploaded as files. For example, messages from the educator or meta description of the file.
  • Files you have uploaded in Blackboard, such as assignment submissions. However, these can be downloaded manually in each course.

1. Log in

Browser login to Brightspace

  

  1. Go to https://brightspace.au.dk/ to login.

  2. Once you arrive in Brightspace, you will be asked to sign in with your AU-credentials.

  1. If you have two-factor authentication enabled, you will be asked to approve your login.


App login to Brightspace Pulse

  1. Download the App 'Brightspace Pulse':
  2. Open the app and search for Aarhus University (Brightspace.au.dk)
  3. Login with your AU-credentials (AUxxxxxx@uni.au.dk)
    • If you have two-factor authentication enabled, you will be asked to approve your login.

Course frontpage

 

This guide provides an overview of the front page of a course and shows all the different features you can access from the front page.

3. Profile picture

It is a good idea to add your profile picture to Brightspace. The picture will be shown on multiple pages. Do the following:

  1. Click on your name in the upper right corner.
  2. Select “Profile” in the menu.
  3. Click “Change picture” beneath the empty box
  4. Select “My computer”
  5. Click “Upload” and select the appropriate picture from your computer
  6. Click “Add” to insert the picture
  7. End by clicking “Save and close”

 

NOTE: If you later want to delete or replace your image, click on “Profile” again and select either “Change picture” or click on the trash can icon to delete.

4. Language, Date and Number format

You can change the format for language, date and numbering in Brightspace. The changes can be made so that Brightspace’s own terms and descriptions (menus, etc.) will changed from Danish to English. The changes will have no bearing on the content of the pages.

5. Notifications

In Brightspace you can receive notifications for new announcements or posts on your courses. These notifications will appear in the three icons at the top right comer of your Brightspace front page. Here are the three different features: 

In addition, you can choose when you want Brightspace notifications:


A. message Alerts

This guide shows you how to send messages through Brightspace, add people to your contacts and send emails.

B. Subscription Alerts

 

This guide shows where you can see notifications about new posts in various discussion forums that you subscribe to in Brightspace.

This guide shows where to see notifications of new posts on various Brightspace courses.

6. Brightspace Pulse App

There is an app for Brightspace that you can use to get a quick overview of your courses and you can receive notifications when something new happens that you have to know.

7. Download files from Brightspace

You can download files from Brightspace either as a PDF or in their original file format.

August 2021: All students will receive access to courses in Brightspace approx. 14 days before their courses begin. 

Start of the new semester 2021: Brightspace will be in use across AU. 

31 October 2021: Blackboard will shut down and all of the material you wish to save must be downloaded.
